1/6/2012:  JANUARY MEETING

Our Jan meeting will again be at In-Fit Studio on Wed Jan 18, 7PM. Mark Lawrence, who’s been president of the Frederick Steeplechasers, is now a certified Chi Running instructor. So I asked if he could talk to you all about Chi Running for the Jan meeting. Mark has a knee issue which will limit his demonstrations but he may pick folks from the club to help with that.

Link for directions to In-Fit: http://www.infitstudio.com/drivingdirections.html

So, please plan to come on out hear what Mark has to say about Chi Running!

1/6/2012: HAPPY NEW YEAR!!  ANNOUNCEMENTS…

Happy New Year to all!  Apologies to all for not keeping the site updated since the last meeting and post below.  Holidays, sickness, and computer problems occurred which prevented me from posting.  But, should be back now.  So catching up…

- Congrats go to Mike and Kim Shackleford for completing the Key West Triathlons on Dec 3!  Kim says it was a tough one for her due to the swim and Mike agreed.  But both persevered and finished!  Way to go guys!

- Super Ironman World Championships party on Dec 10 at George and Kelly Corbi’s place!!  In addition, a lot of catching up with folks and talking about the next season,  plus a TON of food!  We could’ve had the entire club membership out and STILL had leftovers!  Thanks to George and Kelly for hosting this event!

- We had a good Dec meeting with Giant Eagle dietian, Lori Nedescu.  Lori let us know that there are nutrition classes available at Giant Eagle as well.  So, stop on by there sometime if interested.  After all the holiday treats I’ve consumed, probably should make my way over there pronto! ;)

- The 3rd Annual Christmas Eve Dash hosted by member Geoff Irwin went very well and all had a good time!  Thanks Geoff!  Pic from the event:

dashgroup2011

- In addition, the First Annual New Year’s Eve Run organized by Mike Shackleford went very well also.  Let’s hope this tradition continues for quite some time.  Thanks to Mike!

- Many race venues are now open and you should hurry to enter if you don’t want to pay higher entry fee costs.

- Piranha Sports now hosts the Northeast Triathlons that are held in August.  CGI Racing hosted them previously.

- Chris Kelly’s Computrainer Winter Session is rapidly filling up!  So, reserve your spot pronto if interested.

12/11/2011:  DECEMBER CLUB MEETING THUR DEC 15

Just in time for the holidays, Lori Jandreau will be giving a talk to folks about diet and nutrition, especially from an endurance athlete’s point of view. Lori is the dietitian at Giant Eagle on W 7th St here in Frederick and also a fast marathoner, hoping to become a fast triathlete.

In addition to Lori’s talk, the meeting will be held at If the Shoe Fit’s new location at 1170 W Patrick St, which used to house the Music & Art/Blockbuster stores. This is right after the Free State gas station and just before the Verizon Wireless Store. Interestingly enough, the little shopping area is across the other Giant Eagle food store/shopping area.

This all takes place Thursday, Dec 15 at 7PM.

Hope to see you there!

11/8/2011:  NOVEMBER CLUB MEETING WED NOV 16

Sorry but I’ve had to move the club meeting from Tues Nov 15 to the next evening Nov 16. I had started to plan the meeting early last month and my meeting idea didn’t pan out. So, I’ve had to scramble to get something else arranged.

Therefore, please plan to meeting Wed Nov 16, 7 PM, at In-Fit Studio on N Bentz St in Frederick. After club business, my chiropractor Dr Robert Staley of Family Chiropractic Center will be speaking to us and I’ve indicated what areas would interest us the most. Heck, after treating me for a while, he’s pretty familiar now with what ails triathletes ;)

So, now that most of the tri season is done, come on out to see how Dr Staley can fix you up for next season.

Again, apologies for the late notice…stuff happens.

Hope to see you there!

11/8/2011: LOTS OF UPDATES:

It was a nail biting, exciting, and record breaking day at this year’s Ironman Florida, held this past Sat, Nov 5. A quick note about the pro races:

- Switzerland’s Ronnie Schildknecht did the first ever sub-8 Ironman distance coming in at 7:59:42!

- Defending women’s champ for the course USA’s Jessica Jacobs set a new women’s course record coming in sub-9 at 8:55:10

Absolutely amazing!!

And FTC had 4 members participating in this historic event:

- George Corbi, first IM event

- Greg Snellings, first IM event

- Tamara Bruce

- Lisa Houck

And I’m happy to say that ALL 4 members FINISHED Florida with George, Greg, and Lisa earning their first Ironman finish!!! And George and Greg came in with sub-11 times. Fantastic folks!!! A great day for FTC!! CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!!!! YOU – ARE – AN – IRONMAN!!!

Ken Racine did his second Ragnar Relay this past weekend in Tennessee. The course was from Chattanooga to Nashville, 196 miles. Ken ran with a 12 person team and did an 18.6 mile leg. From Ken “Tons of fun for about 30 hours! Their motto is, Run, Drive, Sleep, Repeat! Sleeping is what you do the least! “  Nice Ken!

In a lesser known event, yours truly competed in Fire on the Mountain 50K (32.1 miles) yesterday, which took place mostly on the trails in the Green Ridge State Forest. A nice day for trail running and it really doesn’t get much better than it did. A bit cold to start as it was around 30 degrees. But it warmed up nicely in the afternoon with bright sunshine during the entire day.

Though I made a few mistakes and had problems during the latter problem of the run (I think I fell like 10 times during the last 6 or 7 miles), I still had a decent time and finished well overall. Official results are not out yet but it’s looking like I came in 12th out of 57 listed finishers so far with a time of 6:17:42. I might have also taken the Male Grand Masters spot as well (no, I wasn’t the only guy 50+ out there either). Look for my detailed and exciting race report later this week.

FTC had a fairly large contingent of Tri Gals (aka TriBABES) at Beach 2 Battleship Half Iron distance events on Oct 29 and all who competed finished in their events. So congratulations go to:

 - Anne Regules (Half Iron)

- Leslie Parente (Half Iron)

- Laura Cathers (Half Iron)

- Michele Trdina (AquaBike, 2nd in Women !!!)

- Meta Rascov & Susan Errickson (Woman Relay, Carol Baker of Frederick was 3rd member of the relay)

And of course, member Christine Maztko was there supporting the gals!

So again congrats to all who competed and supported in Beach 2 Battleship events on Sat!!

Doug Milliken completed his first marathon at the Baltimore Marathon on Oct 15 and came in under 4 hours!  Congrats Doug and now you’re hooked, right?

Mindy Korol completed the Baltimore Half Marathon on Oct 15 as well…good race, Mindy!

Kim and Mike Shackleford finished the Army 10-miler on Sunday Oct 9 with Mike having a great (as reported by Kim).  Super, you two!  Jake Fox also did as well as Erica Dodge and her husband.

Next from George Corbi:  George did the Cape Henlopen Sprint with Piranha sports on Sunday. He took 1ST in AG and 4TH overall, just 7 seconds form a top 3 podium finish!!!  CONGRATS George!

Greg Snellings did the Richmond Sprint Tri during the same weekend (Richmond Multisports). He finished 7th overall (only 1 min from podium!!) and 1st in age group (won by nearly 6 minutes). Also had the fastest bike split and best I can tell a bike course record at 23.3 mph on a fairly rolling course. He even beat their local pro by :45 on the bike, although Greg says he smoked them all overall.

On Oct 8, Vicki Bate did Setup Event’s Waterman’s Half on Saturday Oct 8.  She took 2nd in AG despite being somewhat injured/sick, water of 60 degrees with heavy seaweed, longer than 1.2 swim, hilly bike course that had potholes and glass!!  However, Vicki says she’d do that again rather than the heat at Eagleman (Ken Racine – take note ;-) )   Another podium place under your belt – TERRIFIC!

10/19/2011: REMINDER MEETING TONIGHT

Reminder of our Oct meeting at Kip Jawish’s In-Fit Studio tonight 7PM in Frederick. I know that some of you may have parent-teacher conferences scheduled. As we usually don’t get started until 10-15 min after 7 and I go over club business during the next 20-30 min, Kip will probably give his talk about In-Fit sometime around 7:30-7:45. So, if you can’t make it until a bit later, that should work. I’m sure Kip will also be glad to talk to you for a bit one on one afterwards and also be happy to set up an appointment if you want to discuss training with him at another time as well.

If you’ve never been to In-Fit before, it’s a little hard to find when it gets dark in the Fall as there’s no sign out front of the studio. Members check your email to call my cell if you’re having some problems getting there. You can also call the studio for directions beforehand as well as checking out directions via Google Maps. There’s place on the web site at http://www.infitstudio.com/ where you can also get directions from wherever you’re coming from as well.

Hope to see you there!!

10/7/2011:  TRIATHLON’S BIG SHOW TOMORROW!!

That’s right folks! It’s KONA TIME!! This Saturday Oct 8 is the Ironman World Championships at Kona on the big island of Hawaii!! As usual, you can follow all the coverage live online in streaming video at www.ironmanlive.com. I know I’ll be watching most of the day as long as the video stream is working.

Also like to let all know that Frederick Elite Triathlete Herb Spicer will be competing again at Kona as well. Was leaving Thursday, so hopefully he’s on his way. To follow Herb’s progress, go to Athlete Tracker and enter his last name.

Pretty sure the race starts at 11:30 AM EDT (6:30 AM Hawaiian time, they don’t observe daylight savings time), but check the ironmanlive.com website for updates on this.

If you are busy and can’t watch this, know that we’ll again be getting together probably in Dec to watch the NBC version of the Championsips. Look for that announcement in November.

Enjoy!…please no calls on Sat. They’ll go straight to voicemail. ;-)

10/7/2011:  UPDATES

Sept meeting - A big ”THANKS” to Chris and Fred Kelley for opening up and showcasing the Speed Shop for the club! Some pretty interesting and exciting new cycling training options are a happening! Sign up when you can folks!  Also, mucho thanks for the refreshments as well!

Racing Results:

On Sept 18 at Setup Event’s Warrentown Sprint, Greg Snellings took the top Masters Male win and Jake Fox got 3rd Masters Male. Outstanding!!

Nancy Kady, Helen Sipes, and Karen Hite finished the YMCA’s Women’s Tri on Sept 25! And I have the pics to prove that you were on the run! Great job, gals! And nice pose Karen ;-) I know, revenge will be yours huh?

Also on Setp 25, Dan Pfeil finished Ironman 70.3 Augusta under 5 hours and set a new PR for himself! That’s tremendous Dan! It just keeps getting better, huh?

This past Saturday in the rain and chilly conditions, Nancy Kady and her husband Noah completed Freedom’s Run 10K in matching red outfits – cute!

Also at Freedom’s Run, Catie DeLuca completed the full Marathon! Catie – you did it!! Super!!

Despite the cold, wind, and breezy conditions at this Sunday’s Half Full 40 and 70 Triathlons, members Ken Racine, Charlie Smith, and Darran Wigelsworth finished their respective races! First time at the HIM distance for Darran and he says he came in 9th in AG, though the results posted say 4th! This despite him saying he didn’t have some consistent training!  Hmm, yeah, Darran, imagine if you did!  Ken Racine and Charlie Smith earned a podium spots the 40 distance both taking second plance in their divisions, AG for Ken andClydesdales for Charlie, with Ken taking 11th overall!! Big CONGRATS guys!!

9/23/2011:  MORE WEEKEND RACING

Member Kevin Clark is also racing in the Naylor’s Beach Du, put on byRichmond Multisport, Sunday, 9/25, http://www.richmondmultisports.com/naylors-beach-triathlon-duathlon.htm

In addition, member Jake Fox will be doing the Cumberland – Washington DC Ragnar Relay 9/24-9/25.  Jake will be part of several teams that will run relay style nearly 200 miles between those 2 points.  Unless otherwise noted, each member runs 3 legs of varying distances during the next two days.  Can you say sleep depravation??   It’s a great experience though!

Good Luck guys!

9/23/2011: CHESAPEAKEMAN FESTIVAL; YMCA’S WOMENS SPRINT

Tomorrow is CTA’s Chesapeakeman Triathlon Festival which consists of multiple distance and type of events:

A full distance triathlon, i.e. Ironman distance, AqauVelo at Ironman distances (2.4 swim, 112 bike), Skipjack tri – a 1/2 Ironman-like distance event (1.2 swim, 64 mile bike, 10 mile run), and The Bugeye – new this year for the festival, this is a sprint event

Start and finish will be like Eagleman in Cambridge MD on the Eastern Shore

Sunday is the Frederick YMCA’s Women’s Triathlon, this year taking place in Middletown. This is a spint tri consisting of a pool swim, a 10 mile bike, and a 5K run)

Good luck to all racing, especially FTC Iron Gals in the Women’s Tri!

9/23/2011: TRULY A “SAVAGE” WEEKEND!

- In Savageman 30.0 on Saturday, Kevin Clark took 1st in M 45-49!!! And 18th overall out of 383 finishers!! Way to go Kevin!! I arrived to setup for the 70.0 event during the 30.0 awards ceremony just in time to hear your name on the loudspeaker! SAVAGE! Outstanding!!!

- Also in Savageman 30.0, Meridith Roark finished in W 35-39. Way to be SAVAGE!

- In Savageman 70.0 on Sunday, Geoff Irwin took 1st in M 45-49!!!! And 18th overall out of 363 finishers!! Absolutely amazing!! BIG SAVAGE! GRRR!

- For those that follow him, local Elite Lucas McCollum placed 4th overall in Savageman 70.0 and was the 1st place Amateur behind the top 3 pros. WOW!! UBER SAVAGE!!

As for yours truly (Club Prez), those of you who are following along on Facebook know that I also finished Savageman 70.0. And like the bike and run courses, I had my share of ups and downs, particularly the DOWN portion in one spot. But, look for that exciting tale in my usual detailed race report.

9/16/2011:  IT’S HEALTH UNLIMITED SPRINT TRI AND SAVAGEMAN WEEKEND!

That’s right folks! It’s Health Unlimited Sprint Tri and Savageman 30.0/70.0 Triathlon weekend!

First, the Health Unlimited Sprint Tri takes place on Sunday just to the east of Frederick in Mt Airy at Health Unlimited Health club, of course: http://www.myhealthunlimited.com/

And member Jack Slick will be racing in this and Ken Racine and the Racine Multisports crew will be providing chip timing.  Good luck Jack and smooth race, Ken!

Now, taking place in Western Maryland out of Deep Creek State Park, the two Savageman events take place in scenic forested areas there where many folks take their vacations at year round. First up will be the 30.0 Olympic distance event on Saturday. Though not as tough as the 70.0 event, the 30.0 isn’t a to be underestimated as the 22.9 mile bike course includes over 2200 feet of climbing with both gradual climbs and steep pitches. Max grade of 14% on one climb. And the 10K run course is one loop of the 70.0 course, so it definitely has some hills to deal with. And member Kevin Clark will be taking on the Olympic course challenges.  Good luck Kevin!

Now on Sunday, the 70.0 (basically Half Iron distance) is probably one of the most difficult out there for a triathlon course. The 1.2 mile swim will be the easiest part taking place on Deep Creek Lake, though the first year they encountered fog on the lake and had to delay the swim.

The 55.7 bike course IS the Savage portion of the course with eight significant climbs listed including the Westernport “Wall” with a max grade of 31% at one point and then the long mostly steady climb up Big Savage Mountain with max grade of 21%, plus “Killer Miller” at 40 miles into the ride with a max grade of 22%. WHEW! As if this wasn’t enough, one STILL has to run a half marathon after the bike of course and this is not a cakewalk run course. Two loops through Deep Creek State Park area, with 2 climbs on each loop.

And believe it or not, yours truly will be attempting to survive these challenges. And so as many of you know, I switched from flat training for Eagleman to hill training for this event. It’s been interesting as I’ve taken myself to places riding where I haven’t been before: up Coxey Brown Road and Hamburg into Gambrill SP, up (and down) Park Central at Cunningham Falls SP, up both sides of Reno Monument, and up Harp Hill more times in the last few weeks than in the last few years since I started cycling! I’ve also done the 70.0 bike course so I know what to expect and that I’ve REALLY got to save something for the run cuz the bike course will definitely wear me down prior to that. We’ll see if brick training pays off again.

And speaking of brick, I made it up the Westernport “Wall” during training…let’s see if I can do it with a screaming crowd and other riders attempting to scale it as well so they get their named brick in the “Wall” road for getting over the top.

Now, as this is a “Tri-to-Win” event that supports the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation (see page link to right), all participants have a fundraising page. I didn’t have a specific goal but if you’d like to contribute to this worthy cause, here’s the link: https://www.winthefight.org/fundraiser.html?id=2988

Also, the event organizers could probably still use volunteers and so here’s the link to that page if you’re interested: http://www.savagemantri.org/Volunteers.html

As if this wasn’t Savage enough. the weather will turn Fall-like with temps 10 degrees below normal on Sat and 5 degrees below normal on Sunday. So, have to bring a bit different gear for this event, including gloves (which I never do for a tri), a wind vest, and arm warmers as it will be in the low 40s after the swim getting on the bike….BRRRR! At least presently, the forecast calls for mostly sunny skies during the day and temps around 60 for a high. So good running weather for the half marathon. I gotta get to that point first, though. So, wish me luck and good thoughts in hoping I survive this event! If you’re there, scream your head off as I attempt the “Wall”! I’ll really appreciate the support too, especially on the run when I may just be on autopilot. And If I do survive, look for my detailed race report sometime afterwards.

9/16/2011: LAST WEEKEND RACE RESULTS

- In the Ironman 70.3 World Championships, Jeff Hausken and Geoff Irwin both finished in the AGs! Jeff came in just over 5 hours and Geoff squeaked in under the 5 hour mark. Outstanding guys! Sounded like a great race day too!

- At the Nation’s Tri which actually turned into a Du because of Potomac River water quality concerns, Ken Racine, Mike Shackleford, and Kevin Clark finished and with great times! All three indicated they had PRs and Ken said he finished with Mike sprinting at the end.  Kevin nearly made the podium to with a 4th in M45-49 AG!!!  Way to go guys!

- At the Patriot’s Half in Williamsburg VA, Rosalind Hain finished in her AG. I forwarded Roz’s race report in a separate club email. Congrats on finishing Roz!

- At Rev3′s Cedar Point Half, Christina Rumancik completed her first Half in under 6 hours! By her video, she did so in Blazeman style, rolling across the finish line. More congratulations for you, Christina! And you’re hooked on the long distance now, right?

- At Gino’s Race duathlon, Cordorus SP, Hanover PA, Michele Trdina once AGAIN took the Women’s division and won a nice raffle prize at the end too of Utz multigrain pretzels! Terrific performance once again, Michele!

9/7/2011:  SEPTEMBER CLUB MEETING

As there are a good number of new folks to the club this year and the maintenance season is fast approaching (there’s really no “off” season), I thought we should have the Sept meeting at Chris Kelley’s Compu Trainer facility, Kelley Acres Speed Shop. For those that are unfamiliar with Chris’ facility, here’s a link to her facility with description and such. http://www.kelleyacres.net/

This will be an open house of sorts to allow Chris to showcase the facility to the club and other interested folks from the cycling community. It will also give a bit of exposure to that community as well who are not as familiar with triathlon.

Now, due to some scheduling conflicts, this meeting will be late in the month taking place on Wednesday Sept 28, 7PM. There is an address and map on the Kelley Acres site, but I would also suggest entering the address in MapQuest or Google Maps and getting directions. The facility is on Chris’ property and doesn’t have a big sign out front (though she’ll probably try to to something marking the drive entrance that evening).

It’s the perfect avenue for you to keep your speed up or improve your speed before the 2012 season starts and many members has used the facility during previous seasons with great results!

I’ll send a reminder as we get closer. Let Chris or I know if you have any questions.

 Hope to see you there!

8/30/2011: ONE MORE

Found out that FTC had a 4th “G” man at the USAT AG National Championships – Eu”G“ene Kevin Clark also competed and finished the Olympic distance in the M 45-49 AG.  Congratulations Kevin!!

8/27/2011:  CLUB HAPPENINGS

Club Racing News:

- On Aug 20th, the 3 “G” men, Greg Snellings, George Corbi, and Geoff Irwin, competed in the USAT AG National Championships, Burlington VT. All 3 finished with Geoff and Greg securing spots to the 2012 ITU World Championship Series Grand Final!! Greg and George said they PR’d for the distance! And I saw that Geoff place 16th out of 120 in his AG!! ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING Guys!!!

- The next day, FTC Iron Gals competed in this year’s Iron Girl, Columbia MD. Members Mindy Korol, Kim Shackleford, Helen Sipes, and Christina Rumancik all finished! Atta way, gals! Of note, Mindy finished 21/151 in W50-54 and Christina finished 14/278 W35-39. Super!!!

And here’s a link showing Mindy in a pic from the Baltimore Sun:

http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/howard/ph-ho-hs-iron-girl,0,3873767.photogallery?index=ph-ho-hs-iron-girl-013

- From Ken Racine: Traveled to Springfield, OH to participate in the Great Buckeye Challenge on Aug 21. I did the Mini triathlon which is their Olympic tri with a 1000 meter swim instead of the normal 1500 and a 6.55 mile run. I finished in 2:19:53 taking 1st in the 45-49 age group. Beat second place to the line by 18 seconds! It was a fun race. CONGRATS KEN!

- Margaret Northam raced in Richmond’s Pink Power Triathlon also on Aug 21. Margaret continued her winning streak by taking 1st in W65-69…of course, once again, Margaret was the only one in her AG. But hey, a podium place is a podium place! I hope I can still be doing this when I reach that group! Terrific once again Margaret!

Other notes:

- This year’s Frederick YMCA Women’s Tri has moved to Middletown. Some of you entered may want to practice the bike and run courses and I asked Maria Rubeling if she could send me the route. I’ll post them on the club website in a Post and also place them in a separate email to club members.

- Just want to say that tomorrow (Sunday Aug 28) is Ironman Louisville. Don’t think anyone from the club is racing but I know at least one person that is and it looks like it will be a great day weatherwise. You can probably get race updates and athlete status via www.ironmanlive.com.

- Super swimmer member Anne Regules who put together the club swim clinic with instructor Doug Saar has an opportunity with Doug that she wanted me to pass along and that’s in a separate email to the club as well.

I think I’m caught up for the moment. Life, training for Savageman, and Hurricane Irene have kept me quite busy. So apologize for not getting info out to you sooner.

Lots of races coming up in the next couple of months and looks like I’ll be pretty busy with results.

Hey be safe during this storm and in your continued training! Again, congrats to all the folks who raced, some with outstanding results!

8/9/2011:  LOTS of RACES COMING UP AUGUST AND SEPT!!

Just to note, there are a LOT of races coming up the next 2 months.  If you’re still interested in any, there seem to be some slots open but they will go fast!  So, don’t get shut out and don’t wait until you have to pay more (if you already don’t).  Events:

Setp 25 Frederick County YMCA Women’s Sprint Triathlon http://frederickymca.org/?p=4367

Whew!  There are probably more but these are the more popular local ones.  I think Nation’s Tri is also Sept but it’s probably sold out.

8/9/2011: CLUB GROUP RIDE TO GETTYSBURG ON 8/13

To encourage folks who would like to be with a group while cycling, I’ll be leading a ride to Gettysburg this Saturday 8/13.  This is a “no-drop” ride, meaning that I won’t leave anyone behind and we’ll be stopping at major intersections/turns for folks.  I’ll also have cue sheets for folks as well just in case.  Two locations and start times depending on how far you want to go.  First group starting from Utica Park north of Frederick just off route 15 at 8 AM for a 60+ mile ride.   Then we’ll meet up in Thurmont at the Community Park which one can get to taking the route 806 exit.  Take a left at the exit and go past Cozy’s Restaurant.  The park comes up on the left.  The 8 AM riders will meet up with the 45 mile group there.

More details in a club email and also I’ll need to know by Friday evening how many people to expect on which ride.

8/1/2011:  NEXT MEETING WILL BE A CLUB SOCIAL

With a lot of folks on vacation and training during this time of the year, it’s often a bit difficult to have a club meeting.  So we’re trying to set up a social event for the club members to attend instead during August.  Tenatively, we’re considering meeting at Frederick’s Alive at 5 on Thursday, Aug 18 at 5 and staying how long you want.  More via email and this website.

8/1/2011:  PLEASE SEND WELL WISHES TO…

George Corbi and Jason Senuta who I just found out were in a fairly serious accident with a car while on their bikes last Friday :-( They’re both now ‘better” (relatively speaking), but George got a lot of road rash and Jason sustained bad injuries to his jaw, teeth, and one arm among other bangs and bruises. Fortunately, no broken bones and nothing life-threatening. Still…. Hopefully, the driver who turned right in front of them as they were single file in a bike lane will be cited, fined, etc.

8/1/2011:  FORT RITCHIE TRIATHLONS 0n 8/7/2011

It’s the second annual running of the Fort Ritchie Triathlons, Sprint and Olympic distacnes, hosted by Ken Racine and Racine Multisports!  Fast becoming a popular event and this year promises to be no exception.   Takes place this Sunday Aug 7 starting at 7 AM.  Ken says he could use some volunteers as well, especially Kayakers.

8/1/2011:  OLDER NEWS CATCH UP…READ ON…

Sorry folks, been busy with training myself and just haven’t kept the page up to date during the last several weeks.  Mostly informing club folks via email list of the latest.  So here goes:

Good meeting 7/13:

Member Jeff Hausken gave a great talk on the minimalist shoe line that our running sponsor If the Shoe Fits provide!  Of note were Vibram Five Fingers, Saucony Kinvara and Hatari, and others that are coming out in the near future.  Message that we all came away with was that these might work for you in some ways but slow progression to adapt to them is the key if you go the minimalistic route.  Thanks Jeff!

Swim Clinic 7/14:

Member Anne Regules hosted a great swim clinic for the club at the Ft Detrick outdoor pool!  She invited her friend and super swimmer Doug Saar.  He, Anne, and member Leslie Parentes husband provide outstanding stroke analysis to all the members who attended.  Hopefully, we’ll have another during August for those that missed it.  For anyone that wants to have private lessons/stroke evaluation with Doug, go to his website:

www.swim4purpose.com

Race Results:

A big club CONGRATULATIONS to Geoff Irwin who took 2nd in AG at the Amica Rhode Island Ironman 70.3 competition and secured a spot to the 70.3 Championships at Las Vegas!!! That’s two members now going there. Outstanding!! In addition to Geoff, good performances by other members of Team Intellesys: Richardo Geura took 12th in his AG and local Elite Triathlete Lucas McCollum had the 2nd fastest AG time!! All 4 TI folks beat a few of the pros on the bike course. Again, OUTSTANDING Geoff and we’ll be watching you during the Championships!

- Sunday July 24 was the ever popular Hagerstown Sprint Triathlon hosted by member Ken Racine and Racine Multisports.  Always a favorite with the club, several members participated this year as well:

Greg Snellings, Erica Dodge, Jennifer Blumberg, David Pratt, Karen Hite, Jack Slick, Mindy Korol, and Rich Pendleton all finished in their divisions.  Of note that Greg Snellings took 4th in Open and Jack Slick took 4th in M50-54.  Way to go all!

- In the Cincinnati Triathlon, Margaret Northam took 1st in her AG!!  Now, Margaret also jokes about her being the only one in her AG as this has happened a few times.  But, as in bowling a strike is a strike, a podium win is a podium win in triathlon!  Keep racking up the hardware, Margaret!

- In hot weather where the water temperature was higher than most days in early summer, Vicki Bate finished the Olympic distance New Jersey State Triathlon on July 24th as well.  Vicki finished in the top 10 of her AG!  Way to go, Vicki!

Lots more racing coming up!  Check trifind.com for race info.

7/12/2011: RACE RESULTS CONGRATS

A few FTC race results from this past weekend:

- At Piranha Sports Diamond in the Rough, Darran Wigelsworth, Christine Matzko, Robin Maile, and Rosalind Hain completed this International distance course….way to go, folks!!  Of note, Darran placed 7th in his AG, Christine placed 9th, and Robin finished 4th!  Super and 4 points for the club for your participation folks!

- At Tri-It-Now’s 14.06 (one tenth IM distance), Christina Rumancik finished 1st in AG!  Outstanding!!

- At Xterra EX2 Off-road Triathlon at Rocky Gap State Park, Laura Cathers took 4th in AG!  NICE!  Tough course and tough competition there.

Congrats to all!

7/1/2011: CLUB SWIM TECNIQUE WORKSHOP

Anne Regules, one of our super swimmmer club members, has set up a club swimming techniques workshop and swim practice afterwards at a local outdoor pool on July 14 from 7:30-9 PM. Anne would like to meet on the pool deck at 7:30 to discuss/demonstrate technique and then get in the water at 8 to practice what she’s discussed, possibly with observation by Anne.

As this is for club members only, details have been provided in a club email.  If you’re a member, and haven’t received that email, I’ll be sending a reminder the week of the workshop.

7/1/2011: JULY CLUB MEETING

July’s club meeting will be at our running sponsor, If The Shoe Fits, Wed July 13 at 7PM. As they’ve gotten Vibram Five Fingers, the Saucony Kinvara, and recently the Saucony Hitari, I asked John Kippen and Terry Collins whether they could give the club a talk on these minimalist shoes. The VFF rep may also be there to demonstrate and answer questions.

So please join me at the meeting for a talk/discussion and possible demo on this interesting topic.

Hope to see you there!

7/1/2011:  FTC RACING NEWS

- In Set Up Events inaugural Rock Hall Sprint Tri, Lucas Liriano took 2nd in M 16-19 AG!! Another podium place for FTC’s youngest member!  Outstanding! Plenty of time to turn pro, huh Lucas?

- In the Philadelphia Triathlon Olympic distance, Ken Racine took 14th in M 45-49 AG! That’s out of 137 in the AG!! Super placing Ken!

- And in something different, Doug Millken finished 9th in the 40 plus at the Hilly Billy Roubaix in Morgantown, WV – 70 miles and 5 hours of fun on the dirt roads of northern WV. Interesting race that has Moonshine jello shooters at the rest stops ;)

6/30/2011: OWS PRACTICE TONIGHT

Just a reminder that there is Open Water Swim practice available via Ken Racine & Racine Multisports at Ft Ritchie this evening from 6-7:30 PM.  Let Ken know if you’re going to attend by 1PM today so you only have to pay $7 instead of $10.  Ken’s email is on the site:

6/20/2011: RACING CONGRATS; MEETING REMINDER

Congrats to all FTC members who raced this weekend!

- In the DC Triathlon, I saw that Kevin Clark, Laura Cathers, Vicki Bate, Mike Shackleford, and Patty Clements all completed the International Distance event. And Vicki’s place in her AG alowed her to qualify for the HyVee 5150 National Championship.. Des Moines Iowa!! NICE!!

- In the Tri-To-Win Sprint Tri, David Pratt completed his FIRST triathlon! Way to go, David! So, are you hooked now?

- I’ll also note that Linda Cronise completed the Baltimore 10 miler in the top 10% of her AG! Keeping up that fast running tradition, Linda!

That’s all that I knew of racing this past weekend. Again, congrats to all!

Reminder that tomorrow evening will be our June meeting, 7PM at In-Fit Studio in Frederick.

Hope to see you there!

6/15/2011: CONGRATS TO ALL AT EAGLEMAN AND OUR GREAT CHESAPEAKE BAY SWIMMER!

Congratulations to all club members who participated in Sunday’s Eagleman 70.3 HIM event at Cambridge MD. Although not as hot as last year, the very warm/hot conditions still wore on all who participated.  But, after searching through the results, I saw that all club members finished in their respective categories and events! Terrific folks!  And thanks to those who volunteered and supported as well!

Of note, member Jeff Hausken took 2nd in M50-54 AG and that earned him a spot to go to the 70.3 Championships in Las Vegas! Congrats Jeff!

Also of note that in addition to Jeff, Jason Senuta, George Corbi, and Geoff Irwin finished in under 5 hours!!! Super fast, guys!!  Dan Pfeil came real close as well – fantastic!

George’s AG place nearly earned him a spot in the 70.3 Championships during the rolldown but he missed it by 2 places.  Well, maybe another year, George.

New member Doug Milliken completed his first tri here and did so in under 6 hours!  Nice job, Doug!

I’ll also add a word of thanks to member Margaret Northam who was volunteering at the Finish Line during the later portion of the race.  We could not have such class act races without volunteer support.

And congats go the club’s Great Chesapeake Bay Swim participant, Anne Regules! She completed the swim in 2 hours 19 minutes on Sunday as well! ay to go! And I thought it was tough enough being in the Choptank for a bit over 45 min. Over 2 hours in the Chesapeake? With all those shark species ;-) Whew! (just playing with your head, Anne)

As I’ve already said and posted, my race report novel is available for your reading enjoyment.  Despite some mistakes, it was a great day for me!

I understand next up is the DC Tri this coming weekend. Will note that later in the week.

For me personally, a much needed rest and recovery week after Eagleman.

Again, congrats to all participants, volunteers, and supporters at their respective events!

6/10/2011: GOOD LUCK AT EAGLEMAN AND GREAT CHESAPEAKE BAY SWIM!

Just a word to wish all GOOD LUCK to all at Eagleman and also to Anne Regules who’s doing the 4.4 mile Cheasapeake Bay Swim at the same time all are at Eagleman!  Also, thanks to those cheering and supprting all the racers!

Results and race highlights next week.

6/10/2011: JUNE CLUB MEETING

As you might expect, I’ve been a bit preoccupied with training for Eagleman and am a bit late in setting something up for our June meeting. I was trying to set something up at If the Shoe Fits but that has been moved to July. But, by chance, member Mike Shackleford emailed me about a friend he wanted to bring to the next meeting. His friend is also his swim coach and perhaps he could meet with club members to discuss swim coaching for them. WELLLL, let’s turn this into the meeting discussion then.

So, please plan to meet at In-Fit Studio in Frederick Tuesday June 21 at 7PM to hear Mike talk about his friend and coach, Frank Reidler. Then Frank will talk about his experiences, methodology, and possible services for club members.

Directions to In-Fit can be found on the website www.infitstudio.com

Hope to see you there!

6/6/11: WEEKEND RACE RESULTS

Well, another exciting racing weekend! This time it was Ironman 70.3 Mooseman in New Hampshire and closer to home, Rocky Gap Sprint/Olympic distance triathlons.

First at Mooseman, we have new members Kelly Cummings and Nicole Prorock both showed the folks up North that Mid-Atlantic folks can race and go the distance too! Way to go, gals!

Next at the Rocky Gap Sprint Triathlon, our youngest member Lucas Liriano is already starting off a promising triathlon career by taking 3rd in M 12-24. Nice way to start off the season, Lucas!

So another great weekend for FTC club members!

Next big event for the club comes this weekend, Eagleman 70.3. Stay tuned!

Now the day prior to all of these folks having “fun” on the shorter Olympic course, club member Tamara Bruce competed in the Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas on May 21 and completed it by the results listing I’m looking at.

So, a big congratulations to Tamara for letting the folks in Texas know that us folks from the Mid-Atlantic can do the big races too!

Next big club race is Eagleman 70.3 on June 12.

5/17/11: MEETING TONIGHT….CONGRATS/THANKS

- In the inaugural TriRock Annapolis Sprint, member Jack Slick finished in his AG! Good performance, Jack!

- Now though there weren’t any club members that I saw on the results participating in the Ft Ritchie Duathlons, I had heard that Troy Reisch and his family and Mike and Kim Shackleford were volunteers there!! A BIG THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT, guys! Really…our races could not go as well without folks volunteering.

- And rounding out the club race results, Linda Cronise finished the Maryland Half Marathon in the top 15 of her AG and the top 1/8 of all finishers (over 1600)! Nice results, Linda!! Just to note that Linda was racing for her little student “Abbe”‘ and had her name on her back.  Abbe is undergoing treatment for a rare childhood sarcoma.

5/9/11:  CONGRATS!…CLUB SOCIAL…MAY MEETING…FT RITCHIE OWS

First, a big CONGRATS to all those who ran in the Frederick Half Marathon and Frederick Running Festival on Saturday, May 7 and ALSO any of you who volunteered to help! I know several members set PRs for the Half Marathon distance – well done!

Next, we’re having a club social tomorrow evening (Tuesday May 10) from 5-7 PM at Cacique Restaurant on 33 E Patrick St in downtown Frederick. Take a break from that hard training you’re doing to meet members, old and new, as well as discuss plans for the season.

Next week, our May Club meeting will take place at 7PM at Bike Doctor Frederick Tuesday May 17. Shop owner Brian Wisowaty will be discussing and demostrating basic repairs to help you get back into the race and other cycling topics as well as showing off the shop’s relatively new area for triathon gear and supplies.

Last but not least, I saw that Open Water Swim practice will again be held this Sunday May 15 8 – 9:30 AM at Ft Ritchie via Ken Racine and Racine Multisports. After this week’s nice weather, water temp should be doable if the weather cooperates. So register ahead of time at www.racinemultisports.com.

Hey, hope to see you tomorrow evening and also next week for the May meeting! Feel free to invite others!

5/3/11: CLUB HAPPENINGS AND EVENTS:

A couple of club events to consider:

- I believe Christine Matzko is still planning on a brick on the Columbia course this Sunday 5/8. Yeah, I know that’s Mother’s Day, but still might work for you, especially if you’re a Mom. Christine will update all as we get closer to the weekend. Sorry this was cancelled.  Hopefully you got the word via email.

- The next Tuesday evening, May 10, we having a “meet and greet” club social at Cacique, in Frederick 5-7pm

A couple of notes:

- For those of you doing Eagleman, this Saturday is the Six Pillars Century starting from the same location as Eagleman, Cambridge MD. You can do the full Eaglman course or the full century. This year, Brian Boyle who authored “Iron Heart” will be on site riding the course and signing books. There is on-site registration. Check out: http://www.6pillarscentury.org/

- Of course if you’re into running instead, the Frederick Half Marathon will also take place this Saturday. While online registration is closed, there are still slots left and you may register at Packet Pickup and the Expo on Friday. For more details: http://www.frederickrunfest.com/

Look for details on our next meeting soon. Still trying solidify a date.

Good luck to those racing in the Frederick Half!

5/3/11: RECAP OF APRIL MEETING:

Greg Safko, President of the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation, gave a great talk on the Foundation and also handed out a good amount of material on Melanoma, a very savage form of cancer (skin cancer) but one of easier ones to treat with early detection.  In addition, Greg also raffled off an entry to one of the Foundation’s Tri-to-Win events.  By really a luck of the draw, yours truly won an entry to this year’s Savageman 70.0 event.  Truly a “savage” event to raise funds for a “savage” disease.  More details on Savageman are here:  http://www.savagemantri.org/.  In addition, I’ve added a link to the Foundation’s page on the club site to the left as this disease potetially impacts all endurance athletes.

BTW, Martha Herman was also on hand.  She organizes the Frederick Kids Triathlon, also a Tri-to-Win event.  More info can be found on the Foundation’s web site.

Also, May is Melanoma Prevention & Detection Month.  I encourage all to visit the Foundation’s site, learn about Melanoma, detection, and treatment.

5/3/11: CLUB RACING NEWS:

Good amount happening early in the season and with the club in general.  Here’s a recap:

- At Rumpass in Bumpass on 4/16 and 17, Kip Jawish took 2nd & 1st in Master Clydesdales in the Olympic and Sprint events, respectively!!  Congrats Kip!  In addition, Charlie Smith took 5th in the Olympic Master Clydesdales as well – superb!   And they did it despite cold, wind, and rain as well.  Sounded like pretty nasty conditions.  Now in the Sprint, Rosalind Hain, Jennifer McCulley, Catie Deluca, returning member Kevin Clark, and yours truly (Dave Miller) finished the event.  Jennifer came in the top 10 of her AG and Kevin took 4th in his.  This was Catie’s first tri and cold open water at that (temp was 61…BRRR).  I also took 4th in M50-54 and missed 3rd by 3 seconds! Well, next time.  Congrats to all who finished.

- At Ironman 70.3 New Orleans, Greg Snellings finished in excellent position despite the fact that strong winds kicked in before the race cancelling the swim portion.  Nice job Greg!

- In the Hagerstown Duathlon #1, Margaret Northam took 1st in her AG!!!  A super big congratulations to you, Margaret!!

- And just recent, Teresa Dumpe took 1st in Women’s Novice at the St Anthony’s Olympic Triathlon this past weekend!! WOOHOO!  Excellent!

4/15/11: RUMPASS IN BUMPASS, IM 70.3 NOLA, HAGERSTOWN DU WEEKEND!

Hey, it’s a big early season racing weekend!  First there’s Rumpass in Bumpass Olympic (Sat 4/16) and Sprint (Sun 4/17) events hosted by Setup Events at Lake Anna, VA.  Club members Laura Cathers, Charlie Smith, and Troy Reisch will be racing in the Olympic and Jennifer McCulley, Rosalind Hain, and yours truly (Club Prez, Dave) will be racing in the Sprint.  Kip Jawish (aka “The Beast”) will be racing in both events!

Next there’s Ironman 70.3 New Orleans.  And a very strong looking Greg Snellings has been really gearing up to surpass his performance there previously.

Last but not least, there’s the local event, Hagerstown Duathlon #1 hosted by club member Ken Racine and Racine Multisports.  And the club’s very own Maragret Northam will be “doin’ the du”!

Good luck to all club members racing this weekend!

4/10/11: APRIL MEETING TOPIC AND RAFFLE:

Well, I had a good time at Multisport World Expo and Conference on Mar 27.  Saw a few club members there as well.

Now, when I was there, met Martha Herman who hosts the Frederick Kids Triathlon each Memorial Day weekend.  She introduced me to Greg Safko.  Greg is President of the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation out of Westminster MD and is also a USAT Certified Race Director.  Greg would very much like to talk to the club about Melanoma awareness, the Melanoma Foundation, and have triathletes support the foundation by participating in Foundation-sponsored events.

Therefore, Greg will be coming to talk to the club on Wednesday April 20, 7PM , place at In-Fit Studio in Frederick.

Now, to sweeten the pot and to draw more folks to the meeting, Greg has agreed to raffle 2 entries for any of four Foundation events – Frederick Kids Tri on May 28th; South Carroll Sprint Triathlon on June 19th; Garrett County Gran Fondo on June 25th, and SavageMan Sept. 17-18th (no two winners can pick same event).

What a deal!!! So, please mark your calendars and cancel all other appointments so you can hear Greg talk about why you should be concerned about Melanoma, the Foundation, and for your chance to win an entry to some terrific local events!

Hope to see you there!

3/22/11: 2011 RACE SEASON HAS BEGUN!  OTHER NEWS

Well, though it’s still early Spring and nearly all of us are training for our 2011 season, two members have gotten a head start and had an outstanding race. So congratulations to Charlie Smith and Kip Jawish for competing in this year’s Ironman 70.3 San Juan, Puerto Rico this past Sunday (March 20)!!! Both finishing in under 6 hours and I believe Kip took 3rd overall in Clydesdale! Now Charlie apparently had 2 flats on the bike plus other time issues but still managed to come in 5th in Clydesdale (according to Kip). Way to go guys!!!

This weekend on Sunday March 27 is the Multisport World Conference and Expo being held from 10AM to 4 PM (Clinics start at 8 AM) in North Bethesda. This is a full day of activities and stuff to see featuring numerous triathlon vendors, talks, seminars, and clinics. You can check it out at www.multisportworld.com. The expo and seminars are free but there is a fee for many of the clinics. Register on link via the link.

Steve Ruck of Bike Doctor Arnold gave a good talk/demonstration to the club about the Retul bike fit method during our March meeting. Quite fascinating and definitely worth the look if you already have a bike. Steve recommended Retul for that purpose but said that he’d use another static method if you were buying a new bike instead. If you’d like to learn more about what’s available from Steve, check out http://www.speedstudiomd.com/. BTW, those that couldn’t come missed the snacks and beer that the gang from Bike Doctor of Frederick put out for all of us at the meeting (though most of us just grabbed some of the snacks).

Just like to note that with the warmer weather, we’ll be hitting the roads with our bikes and feet. And in our enthusiasm to get out and off our trainers and treadmills, let’s not forget to be safe out there. In case you hadn’t heard, Sally Meyerhoof, women’s winner of the PF Chang’s 2011 Rock N Roll marathon was recently killed while riding her bike. Reports I saw said she didn’t yield/stop before going into the intesection and collided with a pickup truck.

I asked folks to help with different parts of the club and I have several club leaders thus far. I’m still asking for others who might want to help. Let me know please if you’d like to help out.

More news in email sent out to memebers.  Look for details on April’s meeting soon.

3/15/11: MARCH CLUB MEETING TONIGHT!

Hope to see you there!

2/22/11: MARCH CLUB MEETING – RETUL BIKE FIT AT BIKE DOCTOR

On March 15 at 7 PM we will meet at Bike Doctor in Frederick to hear Steve Ruck from Bike Doctor Annapolis give a presentation on the Retul bike fit methodology. For more on Retul, please see this link: http://www.retul.com/

PLEASE try to arrive around 6:45 PM so we can cover club business real quick and then let Steve give his presentation. He’s got an hour drive back and I didn’t want to keep him waiting on us.

Also, please give a shout to the cycling community folks and anyone else who would be interested in this presentation as well (i.e. on group rides, at CT class, etc).

Hope to see you there!

2/18/11: EVENTS FROM COLUMBIA TRIATHLON ASSOC

A couple of Columbia Triathon Association (www.tricolumbia.org) triathlon events to make you aware of:

June 26, 2011 – Celebration Sprint Triathlon Registration is open.

September 24, 2011 – ChesapeakeMan Endurance Festival featuring the Ultra Distance Triathlon named by Triathlete Magazine as a “Best 140.6″, Skipjack 75.2 Triathlon, and Aqua Velo

** The ChesapeakeMan Ultra Distance Triathlon has been designated as the 2011 USAT Mid Atlantic Championship. Registration is open.

2/18/11: DUES AND HOOD COLLEGE POOLS CLOSING

For those that have not sent 2011 dues to us and are going to continue as members, this is a reminder that we need to receive your club dues by the end of this month. Otherwise, we’ll have to drop you from the email list and website list of users in March.

Next, as many of you might know, on March 1, Hood College will close its indoor pool permamently. On May 5, Hood will temporarily close the Bubble/Outside pool until the Fall for renovation. For some club members, this leaves very little options for swim training during the months the Bubble is closed. For some, the indoor pool greatly affects them.

I do have a possible solution, but I can only give details to members as that’s who the offer is for. So another possible reason for joining the club again in 2011.

As I receive an updated list of members, I’ll send those details out about an alternative swim option.

2/18/11: MEETING RECAP AND CLUB UPDATES

- For those that couldn’t attend the meeting on 2/8, we had a small group of folks listen to a great presentation by Rose Calas and the folks at the Expanding Heart Center on Sports Massage, Kinesio Tape, and Chiropractic.  Several members also hopefully got some much needed help with taping trouble spots.  I wouldn’t be suprised if other folks made appointments to see Rose that week or in the future.  Thanks to all who came out and also the folks at EHC!

- I’ll be contacting several members who said they could help in committees this year.  So look for an email in the future or in-person contact.

- Rosalind Hain is our 2011 Membership Secretary and Tim Thompson has agreed to stay on as Treasurer.

- I’ve decided that I will probably step down as President in 2012  just for a break after 3 years now.  But, that doesn’t mean I won’t hold the post again in the future.  So, please consider leading the club for 2012.

- Trying to get a tent for Columbia and committee should take that on. There will be email traffic on this next few months.

- For the March club meeting, trying to get a bike fit talk with the Bike Doctor folks, specifically the ReTul method, but it may turnout to be more general than that.

- Open water swim practices will more than likely be starting up again at the end of April/beginning of May courtesy of Ken Racine and Racine Multisports.

More updates in the next few weeks.

2/8/11: CLUB MEETING TONIGHT

Tonight will be our February Club meeting, Tuesday Feb 8 at 7PM.  We’ll be meeting at the Expanding Heart Center in Frederick, 208 W Patrick St to hear Rosemarie Calas give a talk on the importance of Sports Massage.  There’s only street parking available, so prepare accordingly.  For more info on the Expanding Heart Center, go to http://ehcenter.com/.  Feel free to bring others you think might be interested. 2/7/11: CLUB NEWS/HAPPENINGS

Lots of club news and area happenings that I thought I should share and make you aware of:

- Coach Mike Matney asked me to relay the following:

We have an Evolution Running class in Columbia on 19 February starting at 9 AM. Sign up is on www.fitnesswerx.com under clinics.

There is a discount code for 10% off of the price. If club members sign up and put in the notes on the registration page they are Frederick Triathlon Club Members, we will make a donation of 10% of the total number of FTC members who show up to the club with a minimum of 5 FTC members sign up.

—————————————–

I will tell you that I have used the Evolution Running technique myself along with Chi Running to get me away from being a heel striker and being a more efficient runner. So, look into it if you’re interested.  As this is for members, please check your email or email me at the club address for the discount code.

- Setup Events hosts many events in Virgnia and the Carolinas. This year, they’re adding a series in Maryland. Check them out at www.setupevents.com

- Also, due to the cold, snowy/icy weather, group Compu Trainer (CT) sessions are still going strong at Chris Kelley’s place. Check out CT session availability at www.kelleyacres.net. Club members get a discount for sessions.

- Just saw that one of our sponsors, If the Shoe Fits, got a large shipment of Vibram Five Fingers. And hopefully, our club discount applies to these minimalist running “shoes”. Stop on by and check them out.

- The FTC Facebook page is up and getting going. Look for being invited in the near future.

- Last but not least, a first reminder of our next meeting on Tuesday Feb 8 at 7PM. Feel free to bring others you think might be interested! Hope to see you there.

That’s all I have for the moment. Hope you’re “off” season is going well.

1/27/11: EVENT: RE-EVOLUTION OF RUNNING 1/28

Just a reminder of this event tomorrow evening from 7-9 PM at the Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown, WV.  You don’t need reservations to attend, only if you’re going to eat dinner beforehand.   From Dr Mark Cuccuzzela of Two Rivers Treads:

International Running Injury Experts  host community forum Jan 28 7-9pm
Bavarian Inn, Shepherdstown WV
See the ANNOUNCEMENT here:

The folks on this panel including my friends and colleagues Dan Kulund from the US Air Force, Jay Dicharry from UVA, Chi Running Author Danny Dreyer, and the leads from Newton running all weave into my own life of 30 years in the sport.  This story on Zero-Drop.com (link: http://zero-drop.com/?p=1485)  tells about how all this came together ….leading to opening a small store trying to cure running injuries.

I’ve learned a ton from these folks and continue to do so.  You will too.

 1/27/11: GREAT JANUARY MEETING TURNOUT!

We had a great turnout to hear Mike Matney speak about finding a coach!  Thanks all for coming out, especially all the new folks!  We hope you’ll consider joining if you already haven’t and seeing you at a future meeting or event!

1/16/11:  JANUARY AND FEBRUARY CLUB MEETINGS

First a reminder that our January meeting will be at In-Fit Studio at 7PM this Wed, Jan 19. Former FTC member “Coach” Mike Matney will be our very special speaker and will talk about finding a coach for your triathlon training. Mike will also be bringing a coached triathlete to give that aspect of the talk as well.

Now, thanks to club member Tamara Bruce, I’ve already arranged February’s club meeting. An important aspect of training is rest and recovery. One way to accomplish this is through massage therapy. So at Tamara’s suggestion, I asked if her therapist, Rosemarie Calas of The Expanding Heart Center in Frederick, would speak to the club about massage therapy for athletes. I also saw that Rosemarie is a Certified Kinesio Tape Practitioner and that would also be a great topic to discuss as well.

And so, please come out to hear Rosemarie Calas give her talk on massage therapy as well as Kinesio Tape:

When – Tuesday Feb 8, 7PM

Where – The Expanding Heart Center, 208 W. Patrick St in Frederick.

Check out info on Rose and the center at this website: www.expandingheartcenter.com

Rose said she has a good size facility so let’s see about getting a good turnout. Please invite others you think might be interested as well.

Hope to see you at both! Please let me know if you have any questions.

1/5/11: HAPPY NEW YEAR!  JAN MEETING

Hope everyone had a good holiday season and is ready to start another year of triathlon/multisports!

Our next club meeting will take place again at In-Fit Studio on N Bentz St in Frederick on Wednesday Jan 19 at 7PM. I’ve arranged to have an FTC alumunus speak and many of you will remember him – “Coach” Mike Matney. As now’s the time when folks are considering different options for the season, I thought the topic of using a personal coach might be a good one to discuss with the club, i.e. personal coach vs self-coaching, when to consider having a coach, and what areas to consider when looking for a coach. He may also talk about his transition from being a regular triathlete to also being a USAT coach.

Mike and I want to ensure all of you that this is NOT a sales pitch to sign on with Mike or Ken Mierke’s outfit. I thought perhaps Mike’s insights with his coaching experiences and what those have meant to the Ironman competitors he’s coached during the past year would have to the folks in our club who may be considering some form of personal coaching.

So please plan to come on out and hear “Coach” Mike’s presentation!

See you there!

12/25/10: MERRY CHRISTMAS/HAPPY HOLIDAYS

We had a good turnout for Geoff Irwin’s 2nd Annual Christmas Eve Run yesterday!  Looks like this may turn into an annual club event from now on.  17 folks showed up and we did an early morning run through Frederick and its parks.  A bit chilly but we had a great time!  Geoff and others treated us to snacks and drinks afterwards.  Thanks Geoff and plan on more folks next year as word spreads!  Pic from today (Geoff’s in front as Santa):
